The Chesapeake Region Safety Council Annual Meeting & Safety Awards Ceremony recognizes companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence in safety performance and practices. The event includes several awards categories, including the Most Improved award, which is given to the company whose Incidence Rate has improved the most on a percentage basis over three years. The Award of Excellence is given to the company that has achieved the highest level of safety performance within its organization through its safety activities. The John Lanigan Safety Professional of the Year award recognizes an individual who has obtained outstanding safety records for their organization or achieved within the safety profession. The “Saving a Life Award” recognizes an individual who has used their safety training to save a life.

Most Improved Safety Award
The Chesapeake Region Safety Council’s “Most Improved Safety Award” recognizes a member company whose attained an exemplary level of safety performance and has greatly improved their Incident Rate, on a percentage basis (i.e., during this award period compared to previous periods), demonstrating an obvious change in safety practices during the most recent three years (2020 – 2022).
Award Categories for Nominations:
Companies with the most outstanding & improved safety records are awarded by industry categories, such as Construction, Industrial, Healthcare, Transportation and Governmental. The best performer in each group will be awarded. Honorees are eligible to receive the award once every two years.
Instructions:
Completion of the attached nomination form.
Supportive paperwork must accompany applications, including OSHA 300A Summary reports for the previous 3 years (2020 – 2022).
Must be submitted by a Chesapeake Region Safety Council Member.
Must be submitted by May 20th for the current year awards.

Safety Award of Excellence
The Chesapeake Region Safety Council recognizes companies that have demonstrated the highest level of safety performance within their organization through their safety activities, which aim to prevent accidental injury or death. Achieving excellent safety performance requires continuous focus, commitment, and perseverance from both management and employees, who must take purposeful actions to implement, improve, and sustain effective safety practices.
Award Categories for Nominations:
Companies that have demonstrated the highest level of safety performance are awarded by industry categories, such as Construction, Industrial, Healthcare, Transportation and Governmental. The best performer in each group will be awarded. Honorees are eligible to receive the award once every two years.
Instructions:
Completion of the attached nomination form.
Supportive paperwork must accompany applications, including the company’s most recent OSHA 300A Summary Report, and a copy of the company’s Safety Program index page.
Must be submitted by a Chesapeake Region Safety Council Member.
Must be submitted by May 20th for the current year awards.

THE JOHN LANIGAN, SAFETY PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Chesapeake Region Safety Council “Safety Professional of the Year” award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of a safety professional who goes above and beyond to ensure the well-being of their colleagues and peers. This award recognizes not only an individual’s achievements in maintaining a strong safety record, but also their ability to implement effective safety procedures and cultivate a culture of safety within their organization and community.
Nomination applications should spotlight the four focal points below:
- Demonstrated Knowledge and Expertise
Highlighting their knowledge and expertise in the Safety and Health field. This could involve showcasing their accomplishments, such as certifications or awards they have received, or highlighting their involvement in research or other projects related to safety and health.
- Operational Role
Acknowledge their role in operating a safety department. This could involve recognizing their management and guidance in developing and implementing safety policies and procedures, as well as their efforts to train and educate employees on best practices for maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.
- Public/Community Services
Contributions to safety and health through their public and community service and/or has made significant contributions to safety and health by helping to shape policies and regulations that promote safety and health in a variety of contexts. This could involve highlighting their involvement in community outreach programs, volunteering with local safety organizations, or advocating for safety and health initiatives at the local, state, or national level.
- Leadership/Motivation
How their leadership and motivation towards safety and health has encouraged others to follow suit, and in what way this induvial inspires others to prioritize safety and health in their own work and communities.

The Saving A Life Award
This award is designed to recognize an individual who has demonstrated exceptional heroism, skill, or bravery to save a life. This person has gone above and beyond what is expected of them in their position, particularly in a situation where a human life was at stake. Such actions would be considered outstanding and/or rare, and would likely have a significant impact on the people or community they serve
