How do I become an Outreach trainer with Mid Atlantic OTI Education Center?

To become an authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer, you must meet the necessary prerequisite requirements and complete the prerequisite course and industry trainer course through an OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Center.

Step 1

Meet Experience Requirements

Please note that ‘working safely’ in the industry does not meet the industry safety experience requirement.

Construction

Five Years of Construction Safety Experience

A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in occupational safety and health or industrial hygiene from an accredited college or university, a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation, in the applicable training area may be substituted for a total of two years of experience.

General Industry

Five Years of General Industry Safety Experience

A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in occupational safety and health or industrial hygiene from an accredited college or university, a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation, in the applicable training area may be substituted for a total of two years of experience.

Maritime

Five Years of Maritime Safety Experience

A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in occupational safety and health or industrial hygiene from an accredited college or university, a Certified Marine Chemist (CMC), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation, in the applicable training area may be substituted for a total of two years of experience.

Step 2

Take the Corresponding Prerequisite Course

Prerequisite course must be successfully completed within the 7 years prior to attending the trainer course.

Construction

OSHA 510

Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry

Course covers OSHA Standards, policies, and procedures in the construction industry.

General Industry

OSHA 511

Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry

Course covers OSHA Standards, policies, and procedures in general industry.

Maritime

OSHA 5410

Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Maritime Industry

Course covers OSHA Standards, policies, and procedures in the maritime industry.

Step 3

Complete the Prerequisite Verification Form (PVF)

Once complete, send to Mid Atlantic OTI Education Center at info@oshamidatlantic.org for review and approval. The PVF must be completed by the individual who is attending the course and will be reviewed for completion and accuracy. You will be contacted by phone or email during and/or after the review process.

Step 4

Attend the Industry Specific Trainer Course

Once your PVF has been approved, you can register and attending the industry specific Outreach trainer course with Mid Atlantic OTI Education Center.

Every 4 Years

Renewing Your Credentials

To renew your Outreach trainer credential, you may attend the industry specific update course with Mid Atlantic OTI Education Center prior to your expiration date.

Please note, if you do not attend the update course prior to your expiration date, you will need to attend the industry specific trainer course (OSHA 500/501/5400) and potentially the prerequisite (OSHA 510/511/5410) as well if the prerequisite was not completed within the last seven (7) years.
