Experience a unique workplace and highway safety training. This one-of-a-kind training led by a law enforcement instructor focuses on recognizing and responding to signs and symptoms of impairment. Presentations by various partners will showcase emerging technology resources to identify substance use and/or whether impairment is present, SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) as a workplace resource, and an introduction to Whole Worker Health. Through interactive (practical) demonstrations during our impairment recognition workshop, students will engage in discussions with law enforcement officers and volunteer consumers. This training is designed to share resources and build confidence to address safety risks before they lead to roadway and workplace injuries and fatalities.

Session 1: Classroom

A Law Enforcement Instructor will educate attendees on drugs and alcohol, signs of use and recognition of impairment with a focus on workplace and roadway safety. Volunteer consumers discuss their perspectives on the benefits of use. Substance Use and Impairment Detection Technologies are discussed.

Session 2: Workshop

Volunteer consumers will engage in activities that can lead to impairment and discuss with students and law enforcement the effects of these activities. Topics include dosage, strains, medical benefits, route of administration, impairment, and ability to work and drive after use. Students will shadow law enforcement officers during the impairment assessment phase, and will typically see clues of impairment. Technology partners often participate (oral, ocular, psychomotor, etc.), demonstrating their products’ use and share information about resources for employers. An end of program discussion includes an overview of each consumer’s level of impairment seen and their ability to drive and work.
